Social Enterprise: The Way Forward

Press Releases - Release dated 13 November 2006

The launch of a new Social Enterprise project took place at the Colchester Business Enterprise Agency (Colbea) on Monday 13 November.  Social Enterprise ventures pursue employment opportunities for disadvantaged people through commercially viable markets.  In order to quality as a ‘Social Enterprise company’ a business needs to demonstrate that a minimum of 25% of its staff are disadvantaged, but in practice many businesses employ a greater percentage than this, including people recovering from mental health problems and those with disabilities.

Speaking at the launch were Anne Pleasant, Director of MillRace IT, which recycles IT equipment, Mark Penn from Tendring Re-Use Employment Enterprise – a company repairing and re-selling white goods – and Myles Cooper from Social Enterprise Network Essex, Southend and Thurrock.  Colchester’s Mayor, Cllr Richard Gower, welcomed speakers and visitors to the event.

Bob Baggalley, Chief Executive of Colbea explains the purpose of the project: “We’re aiming to provide a networking opportunity for anyone involved in Social Enterprise in Colchester and the Haven Gateway.  We hope this will be the first of many similar meetings where experience and resources can be shared.”  The next meeting is planned for Monday 18 December 2006.  Anyone interested should contact Jane Green at Colbea on 01206 548833.
