A Grade Photography

Alan Jones and Karen Bury always dreamed of providing a more modern and relaxed style of school photography with a better quality of life for themselves, and in June 2007 they took the big step by setting up “A” Grade Photography.
With a proven track record and experience in school photography, but with little knowledge of setting up or running his own business Alan came to Colbea for help. Val Rozga, business adviser at Colbea, gave Alan lots of encouragement in the beginning, which was further supported by fellow business adviser Trevor Edwards who ran the start up course. This course provided Alan with the opportunity to think through and plan the business, plus gave him the confidence that he was not alone. Alan then went in to partnership with Karen and both their confidence has been boosted by building their knowledge through the training courses offered by Colbea in specific areas of business practice, such as accountancy. As Alan explains, “With the time, care and effort we provide everyone involved is a winner. With the help of the training courses at Colbea we now have our ideal jobs!”
Based in Little Clacton, “A” Grade Photography is already successfully providing photography for several primary schools in the Essex and Suffolk area and has plans to branch out into secondary schools in the future. Already highly professional photographers both Alan and Karen with the help of Colbea are now developing their business skills.
They are supported by one-to-one advice provided by Keith Powell, business adviser at Colbea, who has advised them about many of the practical aspects of running their business on a day-to-day basis. Keith has also helped them to increase their understanding of what they need to do in order to benefit from running their own business, whilst still maintaining their quality of life. “Starting your own business is not always about making your fortune but can be about making a better life for yourself”, says Alan, “I know many businesses don't make a profit in there first year or two, but we have had quite a rapid success, however, we also manage to have an easier life with help from Colbea”.
